AIO vs GEO: What's the Difference, and Why Both Matter Now
Search is splitting in two. There’s still the familiar list of blue links, and increasingly there’s an AI-generated answer that resolves the query before anyone scrolls. Two acronyms have grown up around optimizing for that second world: AIO and GEO. They’re often used interchangeably, but they’re not quite the same thing. Here’s the distinction, why it matters, and how both fit alongside traditional SEO.
What is AIO (AI Overview Optimization)?
AIO (AI Overview Optimization) most commonly refers to optimizing so your brand becomes the source that Google’s AI Overviews pull from. AI Overviews is the AI-generated answer box that now appears above the classic results for a growing share of queries. When Google composes that answer, it cites a handful of sources. AIO is the practice of being one of them.
In other words, AIO is largely about winning the answer box on Google itself, staying visible in the one place where the AI summary can quietly replace the click you used to earn.
What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the broader discipline. It’s about earning visibility and citations across every generative AI engine, not just Google: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, and whatever comes next. These tools increasingly answer questions that used to start in a search bar, and they each decide, in their own way, which brands and sources to surface and recommend.
GEO is about being recommended wherever people now ask AI instead of searching. If AIO is winning Google’s answer, GEO is winning the answer everywhere.
AIO vs GEO at a glance
| AIO (AI Overview Optimization) | GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) | |
|---|---|---|
| Focus | Google AI Overviews | All generative AI engines |
| Surfaces | Google search results | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, etc. |
| Goal | Be cited in Google’s AI answer | Be recommended across AI answers broadly |
| Scope | Narrower, Google-specific | Wider, cross-platform |
Where they overlap
Here’s the part that matters most: AIO and GEO share the same foundation, and it’s the same foundation as good SEO. All three reward content that is genuinely useful, clearly structured, factually trustworthy, and easy for a machine to parse and attribute.
That means the work compounds:
- Clear, well-structured content helps traditional rankings and gives AI engines clean passages to cite.
- Strong entities and structured data help search engines and AI models understand who you are and what you’re authoritative about.
- Credible, consistent information across the web makes every engine more confident recommending you.
You don’t run three separate programs. You run one strong content-and-authority program, and it pays off in classic search, in Google’s AI Overviews, and across the wider AI landscape.
AIO and GEO aren’t a replacement for SEO. They’re what modern SEO grows into.
Why both matter now
The share of searches that end in an AI-generated answer is only rising. Brands that ignore it risk being technically ranked while being effectively invisible, beaten to the answer by a competitor the AI chose to cite instead. Getting this right early is a genuine advantage, because AI engines tend to reinforce the sources they already trust.
That’s why we don’t treat AIO and GEO as expensive add-ons. Because they share their foundation with the SEO work we’re already doing, we include both with every SEO engagement at no additional fee. If you’re investing in search, you should be visible in all of it.
