What Is Technical SEO (and Why It's the Foundation Everything Else Sits On)
Ask ten marketers what SEO is and most will describe keywords, blog posts, and backlinks. All of that matters, but it sits on top of something quieter and more important: technical SEO, the work that makes sure search engines can actually crawl, understand, and trust your site.
Get the technical foundation wrong and everything above it underperforms. Get it right and the rest of your SEO investment compounds.
What technical SEO actually covers
Technical SEO is less about writing and more about plumbing. The core areas:
- Crawlability: can search engines reach your important pages without hitting dead ends, redirect chains, or blocked resources?
- Indexation: of the pages that can be crawled, which ones should actually be in the index? Thin, duplicate, or low-value pages dilute your site.
- Site speed & Core Web Vitals: slow, janky pages frustrate users and lose rankings. Google measures this directly.
- Site architecture: a logical structure helps both users and crawlers understand what matters and how pages relate.
- Structured data: schema markup that helps search engines interpret your content and can unlock rich results.
Why it’s the foundation
You can publish brilliant content, but if the page won’t render quickly, can’t be crawled, or is buried five clicks deep, that brilliance never gets counted. Technical problems don’t announce themselves. Rankings just quietly stall.
The best content on an un-crawlable page ranks exactly as well as no content at all.
Where to start
If you’re auditing your own site, start with the highest-leverage checks:
- Confirm your key pages are indexed (a quick
site:search or Search Console coverage report). - Run a Core Web Vitals check and note anything flagged “poor.”
- Look for redirect chains and broken internal links.
- Make sure you have one clean, canonical version of each page.
None of this is glamorous. That’s exactly why it’s so often neglected, and why fixing it tends to produce some of the fastest wins in SEO.
